By John McCann
In all my years of executive coaching, I have come to realise how extraordinary people are.
I have had the enormous privilege of coaching several clients on a continuous basis for nearly 15 years.
One of those clients has built a business, sold a business and then taken time out to look after her son with special needs and is now completing a Masters in that area. Whilst technically she did not qualify for entry into the Masters program, she contacted the supervising lecturer and within 20 minutes of her email being sent, she received a phone call and was accepted into the program.
The direct effect of personal coaching this one woman has changed her husband, her son and her family members. So much so that they all claim they have been ‘John McCanned.’ I smile whenever I hear them say that.
However, to achieve this level of success, my client had to be willing to embrace coaching. Some people do not understand:
- the benefits of coaching
- that we are all a work-in-progress
- the importance of finding the right mentor or coach
- how to be the best version of themselves
But if they do, they can achieve extraordinary results.
As many people have said before me, the longer I live, the more I realise how much I don’t know.
The joy of coaching is that I learn from my clients too. Another client recently sent me an item of interest. It turned out to be a classic case of serendipity. It was the most perfect and useful information I could share with another client.
People are so complex. Leadership is hard. It is not an easy gig. Managing technical skills is easy. Don’t let anyone tell you that leadership skills are ‘soft skills.’ They are difficult and challenging, but they can be learnt.
With the right coaching and mentoring, you can:
- achieve results
- overcome challenges and obstacles
- build on your strengths
- focus on priorities
The exciting news is that it will affect all aspects of your life. You can’t split the personal from the professional. You are both.
No matter what, remember, you are extraordinary.
